Actions on the region's roads to reduce accident rates

Aim of the project

The Regional Ministry of Development and Infrastructures of the Region of Murcia is working on the reduction of the accident rate of regional roads by eliminating up to ten black spots on these roads. To this end, the General Directorate of Roads is in the process of drafting the projects for the tendering of the works, which are expected to be carried out throughout 2024.

In this way, the Regional Ministry will allocate more than 5 million euros to improve road safety through actions in the municipalities of Cartagena, Mula, Fortuna, Abarán, Caravaca de la Cruz, Molina de Segura and Villanueva del Río Segura, where the black spots that have caused the most accidents are concentrated. 120 accidents in the last 10 years. The actions will include signalling works, construction of roundabouts, reorganisation of accesses and conditioning of the route.

There are many reasons why the safety of a road can be compromised, one of the most important being the lack of pavement maintenance. The appearance of damage, such as ruts or potholes, can lead to compromising situations for road users, whose capacity to respond and make decisions varies considerably depending on the driver, the time of day and the amount of traffic on the road.

One of CTCON's main objectives is to ensure that the construction sector has high-performance pavements that require less maintenance, as they are designed to prevent the appearance of damage that could endanger the integrity of road users. These solutions, the result of the centre's extensive R&D&I experience and its capacity to transfer knowledge to the sector through collaboration with companies, must also comply with sustainability and circular economy criteria, so that two of society's major needs, road safety and environmental protection, are not at odds with each other, but can complement each other.

In addition, taking into account the important role played by users in terms of perception of the environment and traffic generation, CTCON also studies traffic simulation methodologies and the effects that aspects such as road deterioration or the presence of highly perceptible elements in the vicinity can have on driving.

In this way, CTCON's lines of work are fully at the service of the needs of the construction sector and society in terms of road safety.
