New LIFE 2021 calls for proposals are opened
LIFE Program
The LIFE program is the only EU program dedicated exclusively to the environment, nature conservation and climate action. LIFE constitutes a 100% contribution to the objectives and targets of the European Green Pact.
For the next EU budget in the period 2021-2027, the Commission has increased funding by almost 60% for the LIFE program, exceeding €5.4 billion.
In general, the funding rate will reach 60% of eligible costs, rising to 95% for some types of projects, such as actions related to the Clean Energy Transition subprogram.
LIFE sub-programs
The 4 main sub-programs of the new edition of LIFE are detailed below:
The Nature and Biodiversity subprogram aims to contribute to halting and reversing biodiversity loss.
They are looking for projects that support nature conservation and restorations in the Natura 2020 networks and Priority Action Frameworks, as well as projects related to species protection, invasive alien species, ecosystem restorations and more.
Indicative budget: 135,470,000 EURO.

The Circular Economy and Quality of Life Sub-programme aims to contribute to the fields of circular economy, noise, air, chemicals, green and circular economy, industrial accidents, marine and coastal management, waste, water and urban environment.
Typical actions to be funded include technologies and solutions that are ready to be applied under near-market conditions, at industrial or commercial scale and support to public authorities and other stakeholders to implement EU environmental legislation.
Indicative budget: 100,420,656 EURO.

The objective of the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Sub-programme is the transformation of the European Union into a climate neutral and - resilient society through the following actions:
On climate mitigation, projects contributing to the implementation of the 2030 energy and climate policy, the national energy and climate plans of the EU Member States and the EU's long-term climate and energy strategy.
For climate adaptation, projects supporting the implementation of the new EU adaptation strategy and related national implementation.

The Clean Energy Transition Sub-programme aims to contribute to the creation of market and regulatory conditions in EU territories for energy transition, through activities such as development and dissemination of best practices, mobilization of investments, improvement of skills, removal of market barriers, awareness raising, education and training.
Indicative budget: 94,500,000 EURO.

Specific sub-programs of the LIFE program
In addition to these Standard Action Projects, calls for Integrated/Natural Strategic Projects and Technical Assistance Projects have been opened for specific sub-programs:
Integrated Strategic Projects, under the Circular Economy and Quality of Life and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation sub-programs, for projects implemented on a large territorial scale (regional, multi-regional, national or transnational), climate action plans, strategies or roadmaps required by specific Union legislation, developed in the framework of other Union acts or by the authorities of the Member States, ensuring the participation of stakeholders and promoting the mechanism for coordination and mobilization of additional sources of funding for complementary measures (EU, national, private, etc. ).
Indicative budget: 87,800,000 EURO.

Strategic Nature Projects for projects focused on the implementation of Priority Action Frameworks under the Habitats Directive and other plans or strategies adopted at international, national, regional or multi-regional level by nature and biodiversity authorities.

Technical assistance projects provides financial support, through grants, to help applicants prepare strategic integrated and nature projects.
