The Environmental Product Declaration as a tool for change

Aim of the project

The construction sector plays a fundamental role in the country's economy as, despite the current economic situation, it accounts for around 12.5% of Spain's GDP and is responsible for more than 1.3 million jobs. However, this sector has a significant impact on the environment, due to the intensive use of natural resources, energy consumption and CO2 emissions associated with the production of materials and operations.

According to a report issued by UNEP, the construction sector was responsible for more than 34% of energy demand and 37% of CO2 emissions, during the various operations carried out. These figures are far from the GHG emission reduction targets for 2030emissions, defining a reduction of at least 55% compared to 1990 emissions.

In this context, decarbonisation in the construction sector is a key imperative for tackling climate change and meeting the emissions targets mentioned in the previous paragraph. CTCON has not been oblivious to this situation and, over the last few years, has developed tools for the collection of the Environmental Product Declaration (DAP), which will enable companies in the sector to adapt and address these objectives by promoting sustainable practices.

The EPD is a document that provides detailed information on the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle, from the extraction or synthesis of raw materials to their disposal or recycling. This tool, based on the UNE-EN ISO 14025The "environmental impact assessment", allows decisions to be taken on a given product with the aim of promoting environmentally friendly practices, thereby improving the sustainability of production processes.

Environmental profile is an increasingly important criterion in purchasing decisions and choices, both for consumers and for organisations and governments. At CTCON, we have recognised the urgent need to address environmental challenges in the construction sector and are committed to continuing the journey towards sustainability. Our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a proactive response to help companies in the sector to adapt and meet GHG emission reduction targets for 2030.
