Industry and cement companies propose to build roads with concrete

Aim of the project

The Ministry of Industry and the cement manufacturers' association Oficemen are proposing that motorways and roads be built with concrete to encourage the demand for cement and, at the same time, save some 40 million euros a year in the upkeep and maintenance of these roads.

In this sense, the Industry and Oficemen plan proposes the progressive introduction of concrete in the construction of new roads and the rehabilitation of existing ones.

According to them, concrete pavements are "very durable" and therefore have "minimal" maintenance and upkeep costs. In addition, they "reduce the rolling resistance of vehicles, which reduces fuel consumption".

Specifically, they claim to save 40 million euros a year in maintenance and another 39 million a year in fuel, which also results in a reduction of 82,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

During the presentation of the plan, the head of industry, Reyes Maroto, acknowledged that "the reactivation of public works is one of the concerns" of the cement sector, and entrusted it to the economic recovery.
