Climate Adaptation and Resilience Demonstrated In the MEDiterranean region
Aim of the project
The CARDIMED project aims to develop a solution to strengthen resilience to climate change in the Mediterranean region by coordinating individual and collective efforts of different regions and communities in different countries and continents. To this end, a digital infrastructure will be implemented to help collect and evaluate data, open to all actors participating in the initiative, within the Nature Based Solutions (NBS) value chain.
In addition, integrated modelling tools will be used, focusing on the link between water, energy, food and ecosystems. This will help to understand the interactions of NBS, which is essential to address socio-ecological challenges and other issues related to valuation and under-investment in NBS.
These actions will be implemented in 9 demonstration sites, comprising 10 regions, 20 localities and 28 communities and comprising 47 NBSs that directly relate to more than 80 interventions and support units that address the challenges of climate change and circularity. The consolidation of the demonstrator regions and communities will establish the CARDIMED Regional Alliance, which will function as a vehicle to expand the network by expanding existing centres and adding new ones. The project includes 5 transferability cases, as well as 10 others to be defined during project implementation. The project involves 51 entities. Through these actions, the CARDIMED partnership will have impacted at least 28 regions and 70 communities by 2030, created 8,000 jobs, especially in the NBS sector, and mobilised more than €450 million in climate investment.
