The Autonomous Region of Murcia is initiating the process of transition towards a friendlier architecture that generates cities that care for people, through the implementation of the 'Strategy for sustainable architecture and construction in the Region of Murcia'. This is a roadmap towards applied eco-efficiency that promotes specific measures to improve the health of people in their homes and reduce the energy consumption of housing.
The Strategy is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) and the European Urban Agenda, and is the result of an important participatory process with the most representative groups in the field of architecture and construction, after holding 23 meetings and 4 working groups.
The Minister for Development and Infrastructures, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, presented to the highest economic and social representatives of the Region of Murcia this "practical and executive tool for designing the homes and cities of the future", which includes specific actions that can already be applied to "naturalise urban environments".
In the area of buildings, the Strategy aims to promote energy-efficient installations and the use of green roofs and vertical gardens, as well as all nature-based solutions that not only improve air quality but also minimise the impact of flooding. "It is about acting in favour of nature instead of trying to dominate it," explained Díez de Revenga.
In addition, it also promotes the culture of extending the useful life of buildings by encouraging their maintenance or rehabilitation, and the recovery of demolition and construction waste, which will favour an industrial symbiosis with other productive sectors.
In the construction process, this initiative is committed to materials and elements that minimise the water and carbon footprint, and modular construction systems that facilitate the dismantling of the building so that the products can be reused and recycled. It proposes the design of flexible spaces that can be adapted to other uses in a simple way, without having to make costly investments that also generate considerable waste.
