CTCON is monitoring the replication of the project. LIFE HEATLAND in Barcelona. This project, which was launched in 2018 in the city of Murcia, demonstrated that the reflective pavement developed increased solar reflectance by 173% y decreased the surface temperature in 15ºC and up to 2ºC lower the ambient temperature compared to traditional flooring. In addition, the level of noise decreased to 3 decibels and the luminance more than doubled at night, allowing the power of street lighting to be reduced.
For all these benefits, the city of Barcelona decided to join the initiative, and in November 2021, implements 4000 m2 of the innovative pavement in Torrent de l'Olla Street.
In order to demonstrate these benefits, Barcelona City Council installed sound level meters at different points in the street that continuously record ambient noise. In addition, for two years, CTCON will carry out measurements of surface and ambient temperature, solar reflectance, day and night luminance, as well as mechanical tests to check the condition of the pavement and its performance.
The aim of these tests is to verify the good performance of this reflective paving to combat the urban heat island effect, as well as to reduce noise pollution in any area of the country where it is implemented.
For the time being, the results are once again very promisingHowever, we will have to wait for the warmer months to see the thermal clash between the two asphalts in the most extreme conditions.
