The FAPLAB project has as its main general objective of the project to investigate a methodology that allows the design of asphalt mixes in the laboratory and the evaluation/prediction of the safety of the pavement by means of its long-term anti-slip behaviour simulating the action of traffic. For this purpose, work will be carried out based on the test described in the UNE-EN 12697-49- "Determination of friction in hot asphalt mixes after polishing - (FAP). Wehner and Schulze (W&S) method.S)".
The development and implementation of design techniques for the manufacture of new asphalt mix pavements within the framework of the FAPLAB project will result in pavements with high mechanical performance, manufactured with 100% raw material from the Region of Murcia, with great durability and high safety of use in driving, which as a consequence will avoid many maintenance actions and can reduce the accident rate on the roads.
This will allow:
- Increase road safety on roads by obtaining more reliable and representative values for adhesion and friction in aggregates and asphalt mixes, by providing reliable information on the anti-skid behaviour of asphalt wearing course mixes throughout their service life.
- Laboratory prediction of the anti-skid performance of an asphalt wearing course mixture. With this, we can design bituminous mix pavements for a given traffic category and know a priori for how long they will have optimum slipperiness performance. It will allow us to optimise natural resources such as aggregates and binders, and thus increase the safety and durability of the pavements.
- Possibility to use aggregates for wearing course that a priori are not optimal for their use.. With the development of the design techniques that will be implemented with the execution of the project, it will be possible to use aggregates from the Region of Murcia that are not currently used for some roads, thus collaborating in the promotion of the circular economy.
- Adapt to the new European standards regulation on asphalt mixes UNE-EN 13108. The UNE-EN standards for bituminous mixtures are currently being revised to include new specifications that include the friction after polishing (FAP) test to be implemented in the project.
To achieve these ambitious objectives, a multi-sectoral consortium has been organised, comprising the following companies:
