To increase material efficiency and reduce climate impacts, the Commission is launching a new comprehensive strategy for a sustainable built environment. This strategy will ensure
coherence in relevant policy areas, such as climate, energy and resource efficiency, construction and demolition waste management, accessibility, or digitalisation.
It will promote the principles of circularity throughout the life cycle of buildings through a number of actions.
On the one hand, the Plan addresses the sustainability of construction products in the context of the revision of the Construction Products Regulation, including the possible introduction of recycled content requirements for certain construction products, taking into account their safety and functionality.
Measures to improve the durability and adaptability of built assets in line with circular economy principles for building design and the development of digital building log books will be promoted.
The Plan includes using the Level(s) to integrate life cycle analysis into public procurement and the EU's sustainable financing framework and exploring the desirability of setting carbon reduction targets and the potential of carbon storage.
