CLIMATHON 2023 - The biggest global climate change event

On October 27th, Murcia hosted an innovation and commitment day at the CLIMATHON 2023 event, with a focus on reducing the impacts of urban heat islands. The event brought together a diverse community of entrepreneurs, innovators, students, and climate change experts.

An inspirational panel was held, featuring the participation of Gloria Motos Cascales, who contributed innovative proposals and concrete solutions to address the challenge of the urban heat island effect, aiming to improve the habitability of public spaces.

Participants explored bioclimatic strategies, nature-based solutions, and sustainable infrastructure design. Emphasis was placed on increasing greenery and implementing green corridors, recognizing their ability to mitigate the effects of high temperatures in urban environments.

Throughout the day, innovative ideas were generated, and constructive dialogue was promoted around viable and sustainable solutions to tackle the challenge of urban heat islands in the city of Murcia.

During the idea presentation session, our colleague Jorge Martinez Montesinos collaborated on the "Huerta Oeste" proposal, which was selected for its innovative approach. The idea involves naturalizing the western area of the municipality by burying a section of the Ronda Oeste highway as it passes through Murcia. This proposal aims to leverage existing infrastructure to create a green lung that connects the urban area of Murcia with the orchard, promoting non-motorized mobility and the creation of parks, walking areas, and cool spaces that improve the quality of life for Murcians. Their vision highlights the importance of nature in shaping sustainable and environmentally friendly urban environments.

A prize-giving ceremony was held, recognizing the most outstanding and practical ideas that offer concrete solutions to the problems raised during the CLIMATHON. These awards highlighted the importance of creativity and feasibility in implementing solutions for local climate challenges.

The CLIMATHON event not only demonstrated the local community's commitment to climate action but also the innovation and collaboration necessary to address crucial environmental challenges in the urban setting.

It is also essential to thank CETENMA for its pivotal role in facilitating the organization and coordination of this event.
