Management of terrestrial infrastructure through advanced digital technologies

Infrastructure plays a crucial role in the everyday life of modern societies, making it imperative to maintain their functionality, efficiency, and safety. To tackle this challenge, efforts are underway to integrate advanced tools and technologies into analysis and monitoring. Smart sensors, real-time monitoring systems, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data analysis are playing a pivotal role in enhancing decision-making and preventing failures across various sectors.

 

Smart sensors have become the eyes and ears of modern infrastructures. These highly specialized devices can measure a wide range of parameters, from temperature and humidity to pressure and vibrations. By strategically placing these sensors on bridges, buildings, roads, and other elements, real-time data on their status and performance can be collected. This information enables early detection of issues and the implementation of preventive measures before they escalate into costly or dangerous failures.

 

Real-time monitoring systems amplify the utility of sensors by enabling operators to constantly supervise the status of multiple assets. These developments use intuitive user interfaces to present real-time data, facilitating instant identification of anomalies or abnormal behaviors. An example is monitoring electrical grids, where monitoring systems can detect fluctuations in power supply and automatically take corrective actions, minimizing the impact of potential outages.

 

The accumulation of large amounts of data often proves overwhelming for humans. This is where artificial intelligence and big data analysis come into play. These technologies can sift through massive data sets and extract meaningful patterns, identifying trends that might have gone unnoticed by analysts. The convergence of smart sensors, real-time monitoring systems, artificial intelligence, and big data analysis has led to significant improvements in infrastructure-related decision-making. The RosoMachine project, in which CTCON has collaborated, is a clear example of how advanced technologies can make a significant difference in infrastructures. This project employs state-of-the-art sensors to collect real-time data on various aspects of terrestrial infrastructures, such as stresses, deformations, and vibrations. Real-time monitoring systems allow these data to be transmitted and analyzed instantly, providing essential information about the state of the infrastructure.

In other CTCON projects, the viability of new control tools in management is demonstrated: specifically in Healthy Building, we use sensors and advanced a

nalysis to improve environmental quality in buildings, in BIMVet3 we merge Building Information Modeling with innovative technologies to optimize the planning and control of construction projects, and similar to the Digilab project, we work on knowledge transfer using these new tools. These projects exemplify how technology is transforming the way we monitor and manage.

 

The described tools are enhancing decision-making and failure prevention, paving the way for a future where our infrastructures are safer, more efficient, and more reliable than ever. However, it is essential to address challenges and ethical considerations to ensure that this technological transformation occurs responsibly and beneficially for society as a whole.
