MONITORING THE REPLICATION OF THE LIFE HEATLAND PROJECT IN BARCELONA

CTCON is monitoring the replication of the LIFE HEATLAND project in Barcelona. This project, which was launched in 2018 in the city of Murcia, demonstrated that the developed reflective pavement increased solar reflectance by 173% and reduced surface temperature by 15ºC, and ambient temperature by up to 2ºC compared to traditional pavement. Additionally, the noise level decreased by up to 3 decibels, and luminance more than doubled at night, allowing for a reduction in public lighting power.

Due to all these benefits, the city of Barcelona decided to join the initiative and in November 2021, implemented 4000 square meters of the innovative pavement on C/ Torrent de l’Olla.

To demonstrate these benefits, the Barcelona City Council installed sound level meters at various points on the street, continuously recording ambient noise. Likewise, for two years, CTCON will conduct measurements of surface and ambient temperature, solar reflectance, daytime and nighttime luminance, as well as mechanical tests to check the pavement's condition and performance.

Through these tests, the goal is to confirm the effectiveness of this reflective pavement in combating the urban heat island effect, as well as reducing noise pollution in any area of the country where it is implemented.

So far, the results are very promising, although it will be necessary to wait for the hottest months to observe the thermal contrast between both pavements under the most extreme conditions.
