The Environmental Product Declaration as a tool for change

The construction sector plays a fundamental role in the country's economy since, despite the current economic situation, it accounts for around 12.5% of the GDP in Spain, being responsible for more than 1.3 million jobs. However, this sector has a significant impact on the environment due to the intensive use of natural resources, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions associated with the production of materials and operations.

According to a report issued by UNEP, the construction sector was responsible for more than 34% of energy demand and 37% of CO2 emissions during various operations. These figures deviate from the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for 2030, which define a reduction of at least 55% compared to emissions recorded in 1990.

In this context, decarbonization in the construction sector is a key imperative to address climate change and meet the emission targets mentioned in the previous paragraph. CTCON has not been oblivious to this situation and, over the past years, has developed tools for obtaining the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), allowing companies in the sector to adapt and address these objectives by promoting sustainable practices.

The EPD is a document that provides detailed information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle, from the extraction or synthesis of raw materials to its disposal or recycling. This tool, based on the UNE-EN ISO 14025 standard, enables decisions about a specific product to encourage environmentally friendly practices, thereby improving the sustainability of production processes.

Environmental profile is an increasingly important criterion in purchasing decisions, both for consumers and for organizations and governments. At CTCON, we have recognized the urgent need to address environmental challenges in the construction sector, and we are committed to moving towards sustainability. Our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) initiative emerges as a proactive response to help companies in the sector adapt and meet the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for 2030.
