Objective of the project

The CARDIMED project aims to develop a solution to strengthen the capacity for climate change adaptation in the Mediterranean region by coordinating individual and collective efforts from different regions and communities across various countries and continents. To achieve this, a digital infrastructure will be implemented to assist in collecting and evaluating data, open to all stakeholders participating in the initiative within the value chain of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).

Furthermore, comprehensive modeling tools will be utilized, focusing on the link between water, energy, food, and ecosystems. This will help understand the interactions of NBS, which is essential for addressing socioecological challenges and other issues related to the assessment and insufficient investment in NBS.

These actions will be implemented in 9 demonstrative sites, consisting of 10 regions, 20 localities, and 28 communities, encompassing 47 NBS directly related to over 80 interventions and support units addressing climate change and circularity challenges. The consolidation of demonstrative regions and communities will establish the CARDIMED Regional Alliance, serving as a vehicle to expand the network by enhancing existing centers and incorporating new ones. The project includes 5 transferability cases, as well as another 10 to be defined during project execution. A total of 51 entities are involved in the project. Through these actions, the CARDIMED alliance is expected to impact at least 28 regions and 70 communities by 2030, creating 8,000 jobs, especially in the NBS sector, and mobilizing over €450 million in climate investment.
