Objective of the project

The importance of carrying out the ICEPAV project arises from the need to seek a solution that addresses, in an automated and sustainable manner, the issues related to winter road conditions, in terms of user safety and the durability of the asphalt pavement. Consequently, the general objective of this project is to research and develop new superhydrophobic materials that can be applied in bituminous mixtures, and that provide a solution to the problems caused by the use of traditional methods of combating snow and ice on roads.

The main technological challenge we face is to develop a bituminous mixture with superhydrophobic properties that improves the mechanical performance of the pavement against winter conditions and, in addition, maintains its properties over time and is easily scalable on an industrial level (economically viable), promoting the valorization and reuse of waste.

Therefore, the main innovation presented in this project is based on leveraging current superhydrophobic technology, whose successful application has been demonstrated in other productive sectors, for the design and development of new asphalt pavements with improved properties against winter conditions. This, in turn, will contribute to new lines of business and will mark a milestone of innovation in the field of pavement preservation, by implementing new sustainable technologies in the construction and maintenance of roads.
